Nearly 1,000 accidents have happened on Freeway Drive in East Orange and Orange New Jersey in the past four years. Residents are blaming poor design for the freeway’s dangerous history.
East Orange City officials and residents want the county and state to take action to make the freeway safer.
Problems with the freeway
Local officials say that the freeway has poor traffic light synchronization and insufficient crosswalk hardware. Drivers traveling too fast to slow down in time for the next traffic light frequently run red lights, causing accidents.
Liability for dangerous roads
Generally, people can not sue cities and municipalities in New Jersey for personal injuries because of sovereign immunity. However, there are some exceptions. In most cases, even on a dangerous road, the drivers involved in a collision are liable for the damages they cause.
