A divorce can change everything from your family dynamics to where you live. When you got married, you likely did not picture ever going through this major life change, but this is a common experience for many people.

The American Psychological Association states that in the U.S., around 40 to 50% of marriages eventually result in divorce. Although common, divorce can be an emotionally difficult experience, and you should take certain steps to prepare.

1. Focus on the future

Instead of viewing the divorce process as a time to focus on your grievances, use it as an opportunity to look to the future. Think about how you want your life to look after you finalize your divorce and start making these changes happen.

2. Remember emotional triggers will occur

Before divorce proceedings begin, sit down and think about some things your spouse could say that would illicit an emotional response. Then, consider how you will handle these emotional triggers, so you feel prepared when they come up.

3. Take care of yourself

It is easy to get caught up in the logistics of your divorce and forget to take care of yourself. But at this time, you should make yourself a priority by getting enough sleep, limiting alcohol consumption, eating well and staying active.

Healing from a divorce takes time, and you will not wake up overnight completely ready to tackle post-divorce life. But as long as you take your emotional and mental health into consideration, you may feel more prepared for what is to come.
