What do you know about recovering from surgery at home?

After getting into a car accident, you needed surgery to address significant injuries. While you have a personal injury case to pursue, you also have a procedure to recover from.

WebMD offers tips for at-home recovery after surgery. While a legal representative helps you recover financially, do your part to help yourself recover physically.

Ask if you should change your home

Depending on the surgery and your current capabilities, you could have trouble climbing stairs, which may mean sleeping downstairs until you recover. You may also need to change the foods in your pantry and fridge if your medical team recommends a special diet while you heal. Some surgical recovery requires elevated toilets, oxygen tanks, shower seats and other medical equipment.

Prepare for post-surgery complications

Whether you should prepare for complications after your procedure depends on your surgery, so ask your physician what to expect. Common signs of post-procedure difficulties include worsening pain, fever, pain when you urinate, rapid pulse and chronic nausea and vomiting.

Find out when you may resume your routine

You could have restrictions on the activities you may engage in while healing. For instance, you likely cannot operate a motor vehicle until at least 24 hours after your procedure or after the anesthesia wears off. If you had eye surgery or another procedure that makes you vulnerable to shifting air pressure, you may not be able to get on a plane. Even if you can return to work soon after your operation, you may have restrictions on how long you may sit.

The right recovery plan may speed up the healing process. By working with your medical team, you could increase your chances of making a full recovery.
